this money, i'm not going to use it to generate more wealth. either you cling to safety, and when it's time to retire you don't have enough cash, you don't have any cash or you take some risks that will allow you to retire wealthier and happier. while money can't necessarily buy happiness, being broke is a pretty sure ticket to being miserable. i'm not saying there's no place for bonds in retirement portfolio. there is. you should have some of your cash cordoned off in something in a risk free zone. 401(k)s often have prelimited zones. equities in an index fund. kind of stocks that have been proven to be the best asset class in a 20-year period. as you get older, you can and should should take some of that stock money off the table. you should do some schnitzeling and put it into high quality bond funds for safety, but only some money. that's my ticket. you should keep 10 to 20 in your bonds when you're in your 30s. no reason to own bonds in your 30s. 40 and from age 60 until you retire, stick to 40%. that may sound extremely aggressive, but it

[ applause ] we are now going to take audience questions and answers. no cards. so please pass them in so we can ask questions. you'll let me again ask karen, you spent the last year-and-a-half studying and observing how gideon's promise have been broken. what do you think is an obstacle to closing the gap between rich and poor people's justice. what have we learned about the solution? >> well, i think the biggest obstacle to closing this gap is the political desire to do so which is kind of -- i talked about that a little bit in my talk. but i think that, you know, and you can learn this lesson in many ways. i don't know when you go to work, i have to learn the same lessons over and over and they are a big epiphany for me each time t epiphany i had while i was working on this book i'm a journalist and i'm a generalist. i was really drowning in it for the first six months when i was reporting. i didn't know what was going on in court, i didn't know the language, i didn't know the
